Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA)
Support for New Mexico Communities
RECA provides financial compensation to individuals and families who were harmed by radiation exposure related to nuclear testing and uranium work.
For the first time, New Mexico downwinders and additional uranium workers are now eligible. This marks an important step in acknowledging the long-term impact on communities across the state.
Eligible individuals may receive a one-time payment of $100,000. Claims must be submitted by December 31, 2027.

The expansion of RECA to include New Mexico communities reflects years of advocacy at the federal, state, and community level.
Teresa Leger Fernández, who represents New Mexico’s 3rd Congressional District, played a leading role in advancing this effort. She introduced the RECA Amendments Act in 2021 and led the U.S. House effort to expand eligibility to include New Mexico downwinders and post 1971 uranium workers.
Working alongside the New Mexico congressional delegation and community advocates, this effort helped ensure that individuals and families impacted by radiation exposure are now recognized and eligible for compensation.
